Among various pains and discomfort experienced by men, testicular pain takes a prominent place. You may have experienced pain in this region of the body for various reasons and it can be experienced as a gradual or spontaneous pain. However, sudden and severe pain should be attended to by a medical professional soon as possible. This could be a symptom of an underlying serious medical condition. You should also note that lower abdominal pain can precede any testicular pain. Such symptoms could indicate serious problems as it could be due to testicular torsion, which requires medical attention within hours. Therefore, if abdominal pain is experienced, followed by pain in the testes area, immediate medical attention is crucial.
Testicle pain can be caused by a multitude of reasons. For example, a sudden blow to the scrotum will result in excruciating pain that will subside after a few minutes. However, there are instances when traumatic injury to the testicles from such forceful blows may require emergency surgery. Prolonged pain in the testicles occurs when the blow causes bruising, swelling or inflammation.
In addition to accidental or forceful blows, there are other causes of testicle pain. Educating yourself on these possible causes can be useful in establishing whether a pain in the testes requires medical attention or can be left to cure on its own.
1.
Testicular torsion – The twisting of the testicles in the scrotum is referred to as testicular torsion. This will result in the disruption of the blood supply in the spermatic cord and curtail the blood flow to the testicle. Testicular torsion occurs as a result of trauma to the testicular area or inadequate connective tissue within the scrotum. If immediate surgical intervention is not sought to correct the situation, it will result in damage or death of the testicle which will then need to be surgically removed. In addition, this will hamper an individual’s ability to produce children.
2.
Sexually transmitted diseases – Pain in testicle can also be experienced due to some types of infection. These include Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia. Epididymitis is the most common infection that will cause pain in the testicles. Such infections should not be ignored and medical treatment should be sought as the disease can be transmitted to sexual partners as well.
3.
Twisting of a testicular appendage – The twisting of the testicular appendage and the epididymal appendage can be painful. The vestigial appendage is located along the testicle and has no function. However this is present in more than 50% of males. This is commonly seen in males 7 to 14 years of age and will need pain management treatment.
4.
Other Causes – Inguinal hernia, Orchitis, testicular tumor and kidney stones are also less common, yet probable causes of testicle pain. These rare but possible causes are quite detrimental to health and should be brought to a doctor’s attention immediately. Conditions such as inguinal hernia occur when abdominal contents protrude through weak spots in the fascia of the inguinal canal. It will need corrective surgery to relieve the pain.
If not referred to a physician and medical advice is not obtained, these causes may lead to serious damage to the testicles and also to overall health in some cases.
Just as there are various causes of testicular pain, the symptoms of pain also differ markedly. As there is a high chance of any man experiencing this condition, it is quite important to be aware of the different symptoms associated with testicular pain in order to handle such a situation effectively. Pain in the testicles will vary according to the causes. For example, pain associated with testicular torsion will be sudden and excruciating. Pain associated with epididymitis is gradual and will initially be centred on the affected area. Nausea, vomiting, fever, pain when having sexual intercourse, redness, tenderness and pain when urinating are all symptoms associated with testicular pain from any one of the above-mentioned causes. In cases of hernia, pain symptoms are localized to the area just above the crease of the legs and may occur intermittently at first and then more constantly. The severity of pain differs in individual cases.
Any kind of pain in the testicles should not be ignored. The most dangerous kind of pain in testicle is testicular torsion. Therefore, immediate diagnosis is vital to rule out testicular torsion. Diagnosis of pain in the testicles will require a physical examination that centres on the penis, testicles, abdomen and scrotum. In addition, blood tests and a urine analysis will be required for further diagnosis. Once the cause of the pain is diagnosed, your doctor will prescribe medication such as anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate the pain. However, treatment of pain in the testicles will vary according to the underlying cause. Therefore, patients should never try self-medication. Ice packs, scrotal support and elevation and antibiotics are common temporary treatments for pain in the testicles. Certain conditions may need surgical treatments as well.
It is not easy to avoid certain circumstances that may cause pain in the testicles. However, trying to decrease the risk of any sudden impact, injury or infection is essential. Wearing appropriate protective gear for the groin area during sports can greatly reduce injuries to the testicles. Practicing safe sex and ensuring regular medical examinations will help to prevent certain incidences that may lead to pain in the testicles.
Complications related to testicular pain will generally occur only if you ignore the symptoms. If the problems are diagnosed in time and treated properly, major damage to the testicles and their functioning can be avoided. This is especially crucial with testicular torsion, where if not treated within six hours, the risk of testicle removal will increase drastically. Therefore, if any pain is experienced in the testicular area, prompt medical attention should be sought without delay.
