Common Cipro Side Effects

Ciproflaxacin is an effective quinolones antibiotic most commonly used for treatment of certain infections caused by bacteria like; skin infections, sinuses, bladder problems, kidney infections, prostate and many more.

In higher doses it can also be used for treatment of some types of sexually transmitted diseases and infectious forms of typhoid fever and diarrhea.

Cipro Side Effects

Just like in any medication, there are also ciprofloxacin side effects; some a re common and goes away as soon as medication stoop and would not need any medical attention. Other side effects of cipro on the other hand are not so common and may be a little risky therefore might need immediate medical attention.

Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.

The most common side effects of ciprofloxacin are the following:

• Dizziness (vertigo)
• Headache
• Diarrhea (loose bowel)
• Nausea (vomiting)
• Pain at the injection area ( if cipro was taken through IV)
• Rashes

These side effects do not require any emergency medical attention, but if they become bothersome, you can call your doctor and discuss this or you can go as a pharmacist that may assist you on how to manage these cipro side effects.

Mild to Serious side effects of ciprofloxacin are the following:

• Watery or bloody diarrhea
• Jaundice (yellowish skin or eyes)
• Muscle and joint pain
• Inflammation of the limbs
• Severe abdominal pains
• Stomach cramps
• Ruptured tendon

These ciprofloxacin side effects do not happen often, but they can be quite serious. So do seek your doctor once you have experienced these symptoms.

Serious and risky side effects of cipro

• Chest pain
• Confusion (paranoia)
• Fainting (dizziness)
• Heart rate irregularity
• Severe allergic reactions
• Breathing difficulty
• Hives (skin inflammation) -
• Inflammation or swelling of the throat, face and tongue
• Skin blistering or peeling

Stop taking the drug immediately once you have one of these symptoms and go to your doctors as soon as possible. These side effects of ciprofloxacin may lead to other health problems.

Precautions

Always consult your doctor first before taking this medication or any other medications for that matter. Do not self medicate.

Tell your doctor if you are or planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding as well as the other significant facts regarding your over all health condition.

Your doctor will ask you about the medications and treatments that you have taken in the past or still taking. So it is always advisable to keep a record of all the medications that you have used.

Do not give this medication to another person; just because it may have worked for you do not automatically mean that it will work for anyone who has the same symptoms as you had.

Do not adjust your doses, only your doctor can either increase or decrease the dose that you should take. In case of intolerable side effects, seek immediate assistance from your doctor before you stopping or adjusting your dosage.

Intake of ciprofloxacin may affect your vision and therefore may affect your ability or operate machineries and vehicles. So do not drive or work with machines unless you know how the drug will affect you.

This medication is usually prescribed for adults; the safely and effectiveness for children have not been established yet.

Since alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and other drugs may affect the action of this drug, it is better to tell your doctor if you take any or more of the mentioned substances. Of course alcohol should not be taken with any medication; the combination can be very fatal. Though nicotine in cigarettes and caffeine in coffee have not really been established as risky in combination with this medication, they may lessen the effectiveness of the drug.
