Amoxicillin has been proven as an effective antibiotic against bacteria in the body. This synthetic medication is specially formulated for treatment of infections caused by bacteria such as bladder infection, ear infection, pneumonia, gonorrhea, salmonella infection, and E. coli.

Amoxicillin can also be used with another type of antibiotic called clarithromycin for treating stomach ulcers.

Side Effects of Amoxicillin:

Just like any other chemically formulated drugs, there are some possible amoxicillin side effects. Some of these side effects are quite common and fade away on their own, while others are persistent and may need immediate medical attention.

Common Amoxicillin Side Effects:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea (Vertigo)
  • Vomiting and dizziness
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
  • Headache
  • Swollen tongue

These side effects of amoxicillin do not require any medical attention because they go away as soon as intake of the medication is stopped.

More Serious Side Effects of Amoxicillin:

  • White patches in your mouth or mouth sores
  • Sores on the lips
  • Fever or a general feeling of being ill
  • Swollen glands
  • Skin rashes or itching
  • Joint and muscle pains
  • Skin blistering, peeling, and redness
  • Yellowing skin and eyes
  • Dark coloring of the urine
  • Confusion
  • Body weakness
  • Muscle numbness, tingling, and weakness
  • Unusual bleeding in the nose, mouth, rectum, and vagina
  • Diarrhea – this could be a sign of a new infection
  • Hives
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Swollen lips, throat, and tongue

Stop taking amoxicillin and consult your doctor as soon as possible if you are experiencing one or more of these serious amoxicillin symptoms.

Precautions in Taking Amoxicillin:

  • Do not take amoxicillin if you are allergic to amoxicillin or other penicillin based antibiotics.
  • Always tell your doctor about the other medications you are taking and any other allergies you may have.
  • Allergy to cephalosporins should also be considered before taking amoxicillin.
  • You need to tell your doctors about other medical conditions you have such as; asthma, liver disease, kidney disease or blood clotting disorder.
  • Also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant before taking amoxicillin.
  • Take this medication for its full prescription period even if your condition has improved before finishing the prescription.
  • Do not share your prescription with another person, even if they are suffering from the symptoms that you have.
  • Amoxicillin is not for treatment of viral infection like common flu; consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and the right prescription.
  • You should also be aware that amoxicillin may lessen the effectiveness of birth control pills; it is better to use other birth control methods when taking this medication.
